What to Know?
The Permanent Residency Permit for Retired Pensioners—commonly known as the Pensionado Visa—is one of the most accessible paths to residency in Panama. Unlike other categories, this visa offers a “fast track” to permanent status and significant financial exemptions.
Key Advantages:
- Reduced Upfront Costs: It does not require the $250.00 (repatriation) and $800.00 (security) cashier’s checks common to other categories.
- No Age Requirement: As long as you have a qualifying lifetime pension, you can apply regardless of age.
- Direct Permanent Residency: You receive your Permanent Residency card shortly after your initial “6-month in-process” card. Other categories often require a 2-year provisional period before you can even apply for permanent status.
What are the Requirements?
The visa is open to any foreigner who receives a lifetime monthly pension of at least $1,000.00 USD.
- Dependents: You may include a spouse or children under 25 (if they are students). This requires an additional $250.00 in monthly pension income per dependent.
- Documentation: All applicants must provide a national criminal background check and a pension certification. These must be Apostilled (or legalized by a Panamanian Consulate) and translated into Spanish by a certified Panamanian translator.
The “E” Cédula
In Panama, your national ID is the cédula. While tourists and temporary residents use their passports, Permanent Residents receive an E Cédula (the “E” stands for Extranjero).
Having this ID is a game-changer. It simplifies everything from opening bank accounts and setting up utilities to estate planning and buying real estate. It also means you no longer have to carry your physical passport for daily activities.
